Original question

Using the class material, debate the truth of the statement made in Theme #1:

A Good Decision depends on how the decision is made, not the outcome.

Be sure to include in the answer the definition of a good decision and why the decision outcome is not the important measure of a good decision.

******My homework is to provide a response to this student answer to this question, Response must have in text citations AND references from the course material below ******

Matthew LAZAR   Student Answer/Post: Decisions can be a conundrum for many people.  Options may abound, but which option to choose can stifle the most intelligent of minds when a decision-making process is absent.  Society – our family, jobs, and school – tells us that results generally define a good decision.  If a student receives a high grade on a paper, it will often be assumed that they made a good decision to study and put lots of time into getting that paper perfect.  What if the student didn’t study at all though?  What if the student paid a friend who had taken the course in the past to write the paper?  Was the decision still good?  Is crossing the ethical boundary of academic integrity a good decision?  There wouldn’t be rules in every school in the country against it, if it was good.  Therefore, it cannot be assumed that a good outcome was the result of a good decision.

So if the outcome doesn’t define whether a good decision is made or not, what does?  The focus must be moved away from what the “problem” is, and shifted to what the “process” should be (Roberto, 2005).  Taking the student and their paper example, the problem is that they need a good grade on this paper to pass the class.  If they look solely at the problem, having someone write it could solve that problem, but that is a poor decision.  If the student focused on the process, they would see that they need to find a relevant topic, research and decide on a few good sources, dedicate time to write, and so on.  That process is good, because it is the process needed to write a well-written paper.  Will the student receive a better grade going through the “process” than they would if they had their friend write it?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  The outcome is unknown, but the decision was good.

Don’t people want the best, or at least good, outcomes though?  Of course they do.  So what then is the benefit of focusing on the decision making process versus focusing on the desired outcome?  De Reyck and Degraeve surmise that having a process for decision making transforms how one is held accountable, and also… helps develop a better and better process (2010)!  When the outcome is the focus, it can become passively acceptable to skirt – even break – rules or laws.  When the process for making the decision is the focus, there shouldn’t be a need to worry about breaking any rules or laws.  And the more the process is used, the better it will likely become, meaning results will likely get better as the decision maker becomes better at the process.

Having a good decision process, even if the outcome is unfavorable, has other benefits that may be considered the “intangibles”.  People want to make good decisions, and people want to have something that’s systematic and replicable (Boss, 2015).  If an organization adopts processes for decision making, and doesn’t make the outcome the focus, the pressure employees feel to “get results” is removed, or lifted substantially.  Adopting good decision making processes can change the entire culture of an organization.  No more would employees have to wonder if they made a good decision.  They will know it, regardless of what the outcome will be.

******My homework is to provide a response to this student answer to this question, Response must have in text citations AND references from the course material below ******

Kali ImkerStudent Answer/Post:The definition of decision making is, the action or process of making decisions, especially important ones. Although this discussion asked for the definition of a “good decision”, I believe that the definition could vary in different situations. After reading the course material given to us, I came to the conclusion that the saying “A good decision depends on how the decision is made, not the outcome” means that how you get the solution of the outcome is the important part. Making a decision can happen in many ways, when you get different voices and ideas from other people to narrow the possibilities down to the best one that fits is a way to get a “good decision”. Some managers don’t like the confrontation from other people when they think they have the right decision in mind, which could potentially lead to the wrong decision. If you make a decision without thinking about “how” you can get a good decision, you are more than likely going to have a failed decision on the outcome. Brainstorming is one of the key elements to get a “good decision”, without brainstorming and exploring different ways to receive an ethical and good outcome, the decision could backfire.

Purpose

This assignment illustrates how data analytics can be used to create strategies for sustainable organizational success while integrating the organization’s mission with societal values. You’ll apply statistical time series modeling techniques to identify patterns and develop time-dependent demand models. You’ll practice organizing and delivering a presentation to senior decision-makers. The PowerPoint presentation includes an audio component in addition to speaker notes.

Resources: Microsoft Excel®, DAT565_v3_Wk6_Data_File

Scenario: A city’s administration isn’t driven by the goal of maximizing revenues or profits but instead looks at improving the quality of life of its residents. Many American cities are confronted with high traffic and congestion. Finding parking spaces, whether in the street or a parking lot, can be time consuming and contribute to congestion. Some cities have rolled out data-driven parking space management to reduce congestion and make traffic more fluid.

You’re a data analyst working for a mid-size city that has anticipated significant increments in population and car traffic. The city is evaluating whether it makes sense to invest in infrastructure to count and report the number of parking spaces available at the different parking lots downtown. This data would be collected and processed in real-time, feeding an app that motorists can access to find parking space availability in different parking lots throughout the city.

Instructions: Work with the provided Excel database. This database has the following columns:

  • LotCode: A unique code that identifies the parking lot
  • LotCapacity: A number with the respective parking lot capacity
  • LotOccupancy: A number with the current number of cars in the parking lot
  • TimeStamp: A day/time combination indicating the moment when occupancy was measured
  • Day: The day of the week corresponding to the TimeStamp
  • Insert a new column, OccupancyRate, recording occupancy rate as a percentage with one decimal. For instance, if the current LotOccupancy is 61 and LotCapacity is 577, then the OccupancyRate would be reported as 10.6 (or 10.6%).
  • Using the OccupancyRate and Day columns, construct box plots for each day of the week. You can use Insert > Insert Statistic Chart >Box and Whisker for this purpose. Is the median occupancy rate approximately the same throughout the week? If not, which days have lower median occupancy rates? Which days have higher median occupancy rates? Is this what you expected?
  • Using the OccupancyRate and LotCode columns, construct box plots for each parking lot. You can use Insert > Insert Statistic Chart >Box and Whisker for this purpose. Do all parking lots experience approximately equal occupancy rates? Are some parking lots more frequented than others? Is this what you expected?
  • Select any 2 parking lots. For each one, prepare as scatter plot showing occupancy rate against TimeStamp for the week 11/20/2016 –11/26/2016. Are occupancy rates time dependent? If so, which times seem to experience highest occupancy rates? Is this what you expected?

Presentation:

Create a 10- to 12-slide presentation with speaker notes and audio. Your audience is the City Council members who are responsible for deciding whether the city invests in resources to set in motion the smart parking space app.

Complete the following in your presentation:

  • Outline the rationale and goals of the project.
  • Utilize boxplots showing the occupancy rates for each day of the week. Include your interpretation of results.
  • Utilize box plots showing the occupancy rates for each parking lot. Include your interpretation of results.
  • Provide scatter plots showing occupancy rate against time of day of your selected four parking lots. Include your interpretation of results.
  • Make a recommendation about continuing with the implementation of this project.

Submit your assignment.

Re: Topic 8 DQ 1
Students come from diverse backgrounds and therefore place importance on varying things. To reach all students, it is essential that I understand which things students place importance on. This brings me to the first dimension from Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner’s Seven Dimensions of Culture that I feel is most impacting to classroom learning: Universalism versus particularism. This dimension addresses right vs. wrong. Universalism leans more toward one definition of right and wrong no matter the circumstance, while particularism leans toward obligations with friends and family members (Trompenaars & Hampden-Turner, 1997). Understanding what students value and believe to be right and wrong is essential when approaching possibly controversial issues which may arise in a unit of study and can also be important when addressing motivational and behavioral concerns. Another dimension of culture that is important to consider is Neutral versus emotional. This dimension identifies whether a person should behave objectively and passive within human interactions, or whether they should be allowed to express their emotions honestly (Trompenaars & Hampden-Turner, 1997). We must identify how our students tend to react in various situations so we can understand their ability to work in groups, as well as anticipate reactions we may receive when we address them. A student who is quiet and detached may be acting this way by choice, and we may need to find other, nonintrusive ways to ascertain their levels of contentment. A student may be underperforming because of factors that we do not understand, and the student does not wish to discuss with us, but we are failing that student if we do not try to identify these factors. McKeachie and Svinicki (2014) state, “Keep in mind that underachievement might be caused by impaired performance due to stressors that the culturally diverse student faces” (p. 160). By understanding our students from these different dimensions, we may be able to help relieve stressors and provide motivators that increase their success.

Re: Topic 8 DQ 1
To begin, as a Westerner, I must be aware of my own false assumptions and interpretations of different cultures. It would also be foolish of me to not diversify my own teaching portfolio to be able to teach students of different cultures. Just as an international student has most likely had to learn a few American customs when it comes to learning, it would only help as an instructor to have some type of understanding of different cultures and how they learn. Although I prefer direct eye contact or belief because no one raises questions there is a clear understanding this cannot be said for everyone or every culture. According to McKeachie and Svinicki (2014), “A better understanding of the actual meaning of student behavior will put you in a better position to respond to nonverbal feedback” (p. 153). However, nonverbal cues may not always be reliable and you may have to solicit actual verbal confirmation. “Patience, of course, is essential” (McKeachie & Svinicki, 2014, p. 158). Just like with nonverbal cues, verbal communication is not the same across all cultures. It will most likely take time to build rapport with these international students and find the best way as to which they learn. After reviewing Riding The Waves of Culture, the first most important dimension to check is individualism versus communitarianism because “The relationship between individual and group also plays an important role in what motivates people” (Trompenaars & Hampden-Turner, 1997, p. 61). As Westerners, we are more individualistic as compared to other countries and cultures. This may be difficult for international students who may be used to working together as compared to apart. This may also influence how motivated they are in wanting to complete assignments as we are used to assigning individual work. The second most important dimension to check is affective versus neutral cultures. “Members of cultures which are affectively neutral do not telegraph their feelings but keep them carefully controlled and subdued. In contrast, in cultures high on affectivity people show their feelings plainly by laughing, smiling, grimacing, scowling, and gesturing; they attempt to find immediate outlets for their feelings”(Trompenaars & Hampden-Turner, 1997, p. 69). This goes back to nonverbal cues and how not all nonverbal cues are understood in the same way. As an instructor, understanding how students of different cultures communicate nonverbally is not only beneficial to the student but beneficial to you as the instructor as well. It helps enhance and not hinder the learning process.

Re: Topic 8 DQ 1
Greetings,As Trompenaars & Hampden Turner, 1997 states, “that if something works in one culture, there is little chance that it will work in another culture,” understanding that norms and beliefs are not synonymous is key to accepting cultural differences that present itself in the classroom. Our interactions with others are defined by our values and beliefs overtime which may not be valued or believed by others. When I think of culture the phrase melting pot comes to mind as defined by Merriam-Webster as, a place where a variety of races, cultures, or individuals assimilate into a cohesive whole. Even in our similarities are differences of how we may or may not approach or perceive tasks. Siblings from the same household can grow to have different beliefs as s/he begin to experience life for themselves. In a classroom, students may view topics as relevant to his/her goals but important to fulfill degree requirements. In any case, we must learn to co-exist in every environment in which we conduct ourselves within. The individual is just as important to the community as the community is to the individual. The group and individual dimension is important because without the individual the community does not exist; the same is true in the reciprocal. In the classroom, the individual will need to “achieve alone and assume personal responsibility” for his/her work ethics and assignments (Trompenaars & Hampden-Turner, 1997, p. 67). Conversely, the individual must also make adjustments that are suitable for working within the learning community. Universalism and particularism are important to how students and educators accept each other based on trust in unstated and stated rules and obligations (1997). These two of the seven dimensions of culture are important in the classroom and instruction because each helps in maintaining an authentic identity while also being considerable and flexible.

Response#1( Shravan)

The stakeholder approach has its roots in horse racing. A stake race is one in which the prize money is derived from the entry fees that horse owners pay to enter the race. The entry fee is called a stake, a synonym for risk. The person or entity that takes care of the entry fees until the prize money is awarded is called the stakeholder. Traditionally, the stakeholder has no financial interest in the outcome of the race.

Stake races are still popular today, and over the years, the terms stake and stakeholder have been applied to many other types of speculation — including the stock market. In their 1983 article, “Stockholders and Stakeholders: A New Perspective on Corporate Governance,” R. Edward Freeman and David L. Reed proposed that in order for a business to succeed, it must create value for the owners (the stockholders), as well as for those people who do not have a direct financial interest in the company’s success, but without their help, the business could not exist (the stakeholders). The job of the entrepreneur is to find out who the stakeholders are and determine where their interests intersect with those of the stockholders.  Company that ran 17 retirement villages had a dynamic, strategic relationship with current and potential residents.  It wanted increased occupancy and more fees for services used.  The company’s relationship with a university, by contrast, was static and operationally focused. It involved a fixed amount of research funding and co-branding each year.  That’s all that was needed. Though the co-branding generated broader awareness and may have indirectly yielded more residents and revenue, the university itself didn’t achieve key stakeholder status.

Note that different types of medical referrers are grouped together. That’s because they all evaluate the medical practice with the same set of criteria: surgery success rate, range of treatment options, waiting time until the patient is treated, reputation among medical peers, proximity of practice to operating hospitals, and likely cost to the patient. But the third-party referrers, for instance, rely on different standards: accuracy of medical assessments, lead time before patient evaluation, amount charged for an expert opinion, professionalism of the practice, and compliance with report deadlines. And the patients look at quality of service (empathy, how clearly the options are explained, waiting time at reception), cost of medical service, payment terms, convenience of practice location to them, perceived surgical skill, and cleanliness and comfort of waiting rooms.

By clustering stakeholders according to common needs, you’ll whittle your list down to a more manageable length, increasing the efficiency and impact of your efforts to meet the right groups’ needs.

Response#2(Rajeev)

Stake Holder Theory was first introduced by Edward Freeman in 1988. According to his theory he suggests that company success is mainly depends upon satisfying its stakeholders, and those on the people who might profit from its stock. The stakeholders play a very prominent role in the to support the organization and with those people there would be danger of shutting down the company. By, ignoring the stakeholders the organization can have the short-term profits but in the long run the organizations will face heavy loss if they lose the faith from the stakeholders. So, for any organization or the company stakeholders are the backbone for there success.

The stakeholder approach came into existence in the 19th century these approach helped the mangers of the organization to build a plan to overcome the changes and try to build a strategic plan which can help them to understand the necessary steps to adopt and to become successful and it had replaced the existed plans. The stakeholders are the group of people who can directly affect the success of the organization. It is simply defined as how the business work at its best and how it is supposed to functioned.

Stakeholder theory has been able to solve the conflicts like: –

Ø  The problem of values relating to creation and trade

Ø  The problems of Ethics in capitalism

Ø  And to train the workers on how to behave in order to be successful in the present competitive world.

Stakeholder theory points out that people who own stock in a business are not only the people who are affected when or gain advantage due to the changes took place due to the decisions made because of the business. For, each business’s decisions will potentially affect the well-being of MANY more people than just the stockholders (for instance, businesses often regularly affect the well-being of their employees, their customers, and the community as a whole). So, each business’s obligations are to ALL those people.

Finally, to conclude business the final product is that every business would have a commitment to think about the interests of ALL partners, and moreover a commitment to Advance the interests of these partners. Lastly, the partners would reserve the option to make a move against the business if it neglects to satisfy these commitments

Question: What are some challenges posed by strategic information systems and provide one specific example of how you think they can be addressed?

Student response

First identify th challenges created by strategic information systems and then find ways that management these issues.

Challenges:

Change in business goals.

Change in relationship with customers and suppliers.

Change in business processes.

In order to implement strategic information systems, changes must be made that affect the social and technical elements of organization, otherwise know as strategic transitions.

Priblems with strategic transitions:

Strategic transitions are not easy because they require spending money from one systems to another which, in turn , could lead to poor company performance.
